I have a TS-590 and now a new FT-991. I would appreciate any comments or discussion on reasons to keep the TS-590 or should I just go ahead and sell it. It seems that the FT-991 will do everything that my TS-590 did but I am always reading about how great the TS-590 are that I am concerned that after I sell it I will regret it.
I know that I should be able to compare the two rigs myself but I can't.
Any thoughts comments, pro and cons, etc. would be appreciated.
Hi.
ReplyDeleteI had IC7000 and after buiyng FT-991 I sold It.
FT991 is a great radio, te problem is that it fails in my opinion more often than another radios.
My first FT-991 failed two times. 1st time 2 weeks after purchase - broken both Final amplifiers modules. Reason unknown, because other radio IC-706 works with same antennas, power supply, computer without any problems. IC-7000 was working here 3 years without any failure.
Radio was sent by dealer to Germany for service.Returned to me after 3 weeks, Failed again after first TX on.
Returned to the seller. They agreed to give me another new radio. I tested radio about 1h in the shop with dummy load. No problems.
Shop's owner told me, that final amplifiers are not covered by warranty, so next time they will not accept such failures. By the way Yaesu warranty statement attached to each radio states that semiconductors and tubes are not covered by warranty - curriosal conditions. So only resistor, capacitors, coils, wires and mechanical parts are covered?????!!!!!!!
I came to my home and again verified my radio-shack. Was afraid a few days to unpack and connect radio to my shack - post repair TRAUMA. After a few days I started to use my FT-991 with reduced power. Was afraid to connect anything except antennas and power supply, which I verified before many times.
OK radio was working - no troubles so i connected my computer. Again some days testing and connected FH-2. Working OK. I was brave to connect PTT of my IC-2KL amplifier Uff!!!
Yesterday I changed fider and added balun to my inv-vee antenna as was recommended by service engineer at the shop. Radio is still working.
A few days ago I heard about failure of another FT991 "next door" this time radio is "dead".
Problem is that I fear that some day radio will fail by same manner and it will not be covered by warranty.
So from one side I love this radio. For this price is marvelous. From another side i am in the stress being afraid that radio fails and not be covered by warranty.
So I have dilemma to keep radio, or to sell it until it fails again. ?!?! God bless FT-991 and save it from failures !!!!.
What will stop awake me at the night. YAESU OFFICIAL STATEMENT THAT THERE ARE RELIABILITY PROBLEMS AND ALL FAILURES ARE COVERED BY WARRANTY. STATEMENT SHOULD BE SENT TO THE DEALERS AND DISPLAYED ON YAESU OFFICIAL WEB PAGE.
So what I would advise. Keep both radios, enjoy FT-991, treat it with care, control Power, grounding, antennas, no experiments with connecting anything except what is supported and described in manual version suitable for Your radio.

Again, I'll add my experience that I've owned an FT-991 since May 2015 and never had any problem with it at all. It's a great radio.
ReplyDeleteAll of the 'problems' I've heard about I believe are from first batch buyers (when the radio first came out). All of the later batches purchasers have agreed with me that there have been no problems with their rigs.
And Yaesu seems to be doing a great job of keeping us current with firmware changes which provide new features, etc. Don VE7ATJ

DeleteDon, but you're wrong. We have more data than appeared on the mailing list.
Not everyone needs to flaunt their misfortune.
Warsaw - Poland.
The pseudo-sample /four pieces of FT-991, various manufacturing date, 3
various dealers.
In the club we have 4 pieces of this radio, four different dates of
production (March, May, August, October 2015). Three radio to die. First -
USB port dead since the beginning, second radio - power amplifier burned two
times, third radio - complete unexpected power surges/short circuit (after a
week of use).
Nearest autorised service is in Germany. Very funny.
Fourth radio is mine! And since June 2015 never had any problem with it at
all. It's a great radio!
So, for this sample of four pieces FT-991 the result is miserable - 3:4.
Personally, I am not a fan of any of the companies (Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood,
Elecraft, etc), but only quietly watching the course of events associated
with the FT-991.
